The origins of the name “Shawinigan“ go back to well before any Europeans arrived in North America. It is an Algonquin word that means “portage over the crest”. The Amerindians gave this name to the majestic waterfall whose steep, rocky face they had to climb if they wanted to continue their route on the Saint Maurice River. This waterfall, 50 metres high, was famous outside Québec and even outside Canada: some called Shawinigan the “Niagara of the East”. Born with the creation of hydro-electric power stations and increasing industrialisation, Shawinigan is considered one of the major historical sites in the industrial development of Canada. It was the first Canadian city to produce aluminum, the first Québec city to have an overall city plan and the first city in Québec to have electric lighting in its streets – an innovation that earned Shawinigan the title of “City of Lights”.
Share the experiences of Québec’s 11 First Nations peoples when you visit this unique interpretive village dedicated to promoting awareness of the different Amerindian cultures.
